Zumba On Our Marae (ZOOM) got into the Christmas spirit with a celebration of getting fit and healthy while having fun at Hairini Marae this week. The Zumba based programme, supported by the Heart Foundation's Tauranga Branch, has seen a lot of previously inactive people getting active and having fun. The programme has also helped support healthy eating habits and encouraged heart health checks.
'Zumba On Our Marae' (ZOOM), led by Lena Kairau, operates weekly at Hairini Marae in Tauranga. It is a cheap and cheerful way to get active and have fun. To celebrate the Christmas season, Lena and the team had a festive theme for their final night this year. They collected food for Tauranga's Foodbank to help those struggling to feed their families this Christmas and many participants dressed in Christmas theme.
The programme is supported by the Tauranga Branch of the Heart Foundation and as well as providing a great way to exercise, it aims to support healthy eating and encourage heart health checks.
Tauranga's Heart Health Advocate Sandy Ritchie went along to the celebration and says "Zumba has helped people to get active and stay motivated to keep active. When they feel better from the exercise, they really start to take an interest in other areas of their health. Lena and the team have created a fun, friendly atmosphere which keeps people coming back".
