Cessation Practitioner Training - Stage 1
Duation: 1 day
(pre-requisite for Stage 2)
Who should attend?
Health professionals who wish to gain a knowledge base in smoking cessation and gain the practical skills necessary to be able, in the context of effective brief intervention, to accurately assess a patient's readiness to change, to assist them accordingly or refer appropriately for more intensive cessation treatment

Guidelines background and overview; the 5 As; Stages of Change model; Nicotine addiction; Brief intervention; Facilitating change; Introduction to Motivational Interviewing; Secondhand smoke; Cessation resources; Introduction to Pharmacotherapy; Subsidised NRT Quit Card Programme; Current issues

Cessation Practitioner Training - Stage 2
Duration: 1 day
(pre-requisite for Stage 3)
Who should attend?
Health professionals who have completed Stage 1 and seek to gain the specialist skills to be able to effectively assist the patient who is ready to quit through the process of quitting
What is included?
Working with the smoker who is ready to quit (case study); Pharmacotherapy in depth (including case study); Reporting and administration NRT Quit Card Programme; Overview and effectiveness of interventions; Introduction to Relapse Prevention; Introduction to the 5 Rs (Not ready to quit)

Cessation Practitioner Training - Stage 3
Duration: 1 day
Who should attend?
Health professionals who have completed Stages 1 and 2 and who have been working for at least six months in smoking cessation who seek to extend their knowledge and skills to incorporate working intensivelywith patients at all stages of readiness
What is included?
Relapse prevention (case study); Intensive techniques, strategies, life skills for learning to become a permanent non smoker; Introduction to working with groups; Introduction to intensive interventions; How we operate; Challenges into opportunities
