Project HeartSAFE
Reducing New Zealand's sodium footprint

As a population, New Zealanders consume too much sodium which by in large comes from salt.
Reducing sodium intakes will lead to significant improvements in the health of New Zealanders. The goal is to reduce our current intake by one third from 9g/day to 6g/day. It is estimated that decreasing our average sodium intake by even one-quarter could reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke by 20%, saving the lives of 930 New Zealanders each year by 2018.
|
Around three-quarters of the sodium we consume comes from manufactured and pre-prepared foodsfoods. The remaining quarter comes from salt we add to food ourselves in cooking or at the table, or from foods that naturally contain sodium. Project HeartSAFE is an industry-led initiative involving food manufacturers, food industry associations, health and nutrition experts and is facilitated by the Heart Foundation. It aims to reduce the sodium in some of our most commonly consumed manufactured and pre-prepared food. |
