Chocolate is high in calories fat content. Weight gain and raised cholesterol levels are two key risk factors for heart disease, so it is important if you are trying to maintain a heart healthy lifestyle to only eat chocolate in small amounts.
There is some evidence that states that chocolate (especially dark chocolate) can help protect against heart disease.
This is because flavonoids found in some chocolate products, and in other foods such as grapes and onions, have powerful antioxidant effects which may help protect the body against a number of diseases, including cardiovascular disease.
However flavonoid content are variable, there may be very little in the chocolate you just bought. There are lots of other ways to get your dose of flavonoids, most importantly, eating fruit and vegetables.
There are also other ways in which you can protect your heart such as eating a heart healthy diet, enjoying regular exercise and quitting smoking.
You don’t need to give up the foods you enjoy. Moderation is a good thing, so only eat chocolate occasionally as a treat.
By choosing healthier foods, like fresh fruit, when you need a "pick me up" you can fill up for longer and look after your heart.
