Posted On: Thursday, 13 October 2005

The National Heart Foundation of New Zealand has produced a unique cookbook to serve as a practical guide for preparing heart-healthy meals.
For anyone who has ever been unsure or confused about how to eat healthy - this is the answer. With more than 50 delicious recipes, the book is aptly named - Real Food.
Written by renowned Australian food editor, Loukie Werle, Real Food takes you on a journey of culinary delights which shows you how to prepare food the way is was meant to be - healthy, natural and real.
From prawn and mango spring rolls to chocolate banana cake - every dish fits the stringent health requirements of the Heart Foundation. All recipes meet specific requirements for saturated fat, kilojoules (energy), sodium (salt) and fibre. A nutrition analysis panel shows what is contained in each serve.
Beautiful full-page photos opposite each recipe will have you spoiled for choice with your mouth watering. Its delicious array of breakfasts, snacks and starters, vegetarian dishes, desserts and baking ideas are gorgeously tempting. There is also a practical guide to modifying recipes so you can turn traditional dishes into heart-healthy favourites.
The guide shows you how to reduce, remove and replace ingredients to reduce saturated fat intake. The book also features a section on commonly asked questions and addresses some of the myths related to cholesterol, oils, margarines and low- carbohydrate diets.
"Healthy food doesn't need to be dull," says the Heart Foundation's Nutritionist and Catering Programme Manager, Andrea Bidois. "These recipes use fresh ingredients that are widely available to create easy to prepare, great-tasting meals without much fuss - but with lots of flair. They provide nutritious options for people of all ages," she says.
Real Food will be available from The National Heart Foundation from October 2005 by phoning 0800 830 100, downloading an order form or ordering online. Proceeds from direct sales from the Foundation will be used to help the charity continue its work funding heart research, cardiac care and healthy lifestyle programmes.
