The Heart Foundation offers fully-funded training opportunities for healthcare workers (both registered and unregistered) by our team of stop smoking specialists.

E-Learning for Stop Smoking Brief Interventions

The Heart Foundation stop smoking team have a new e-learning. This training is a mixture of online learning modules and face to face skills workshops. Participants will be required to complete the e-learning modules to be eligible to complete face to face skills workshops.

Once the e-learning modules and a short knowledge test are complete, registered health professionals can complete a four hour skills workshop and non-registered health professionals a one day skills workshop to motivate people who smoke to access stop smoking services.

 

Stop Smoking training for Primary Care

Recognised for CME by RNZCGP.

The overall aim of these sessions is that you will be competent, confident and inspired to promote help for smokers to quit in your practice.

These four short courses can be facilitated in a short time or in more detail for longer periods.

Duration: 1, 2 or 3 hours

Learning outcomes for the four modules

Lighting the Fire

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Discuss the 2025 vision in the context of your practice
  • Understand the importance of ‘the offer of help’ to every smoker as part of everyday practice
  • List smokefree referral options and processes to refer patients appropriately

NRT Mythbusting

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Discuss and dispel current myths around NRT use
  • Describe new delivery systems of NRT
  • Outline the optimal use of NRT

Get the Credit

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Discuss issues surrounding the health target
  • Discuss systems and processes used in your practice to record interventions and how they may be improved
  • Share knowledge with other practices and find out what is happening around the country
  • Outline your change management processes

Motivational Interviewing Taster

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Describe the spirit of M I
  • Identify the processes of M I
  • Give examples of M I skills

MOH online tool for registered healthcare professionals

An e-learning tool called ABC(Ask, Brief advice, provide or refer for Cessation support), is available for registered healthcare professionals who wish to be able to effectively provide ABC to their patients/clients. By completing the module you will receive a printable certificate (evidence of one hour of professional development) and will be able to provide people who smoke access to subsidised Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), by either prescribing or by becoming a Quit Card provider. This tool is endorsed for CME points by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.
