The Tala Lelei newsletter is the discontinued newsletter of Pacific Heartbeats former Health Promoting Church (HPC) programme which was delivered in Auckland and Wellington. Hence, its Samoan name (Tala Lelei), meaning ‘good news’ from the bible. Tala Lelei also has similar meanings in other Pacific languages such as Tongan.
The newsletter was set up to help the HPC churches with their respective healthy eating and physical activity, and smokefree promotion projects by sharing their success stories and learning. Other useful information was also included in the newsletter such as recipes, upcoming events, other services, healthy tips and contact details.
It was published in English, as this was the common language for the participating HPC churches of mainly Samoan, Cook Island, Tongan and Niuean ethnicities.
Articles include the launch of the Tala Pasifika - National Pacific Tobacco Control Service (NPTC) strategic plan, tackling the myth that Quitting equals weight gains, Pacific Heartbeats Community Toabcco Control Training, and an opinion article on the high rates of Pacific smoking and the on average lower income, "It's not how much we earn but what you do with what you earn that makes the difference". It also has a yummy recipe for Rice Salad.
