Pacific Smoking Cessation Training

We provide a free Smoking Cessation training course that is made up of a one day Theory Training and one day of Follow-Up Support. Everyone who completes the course is able to become a registered Quit Card Provider with the Quit Group (Conditions Apply). The course focuses on how to work with and for Pacific people using the ABC (Ask, Brief advice, Cessation support) approach in supporting stop smoking attempts, and is based on the Revised New Zealand Smoking Cessation Guidelines 2007

Who is the course for and who can attend?

This training is open to anyone who would like to help members of the Pacific community stop smoking. The course will benefit those already working in the community, whether you are Pacific or non-Pacific, a health worker, youth worker, church member or a caring member of the community.

 

What will I learn?

Course Structure:

The Smoking Cessation course is run in two parts.

  • Day One is Theory Training in a classroom setting.
  • Day Two is a Follow-Up assessment between you and your group and one of the Pacific Heartbeat Tobacco Control Coordinators. This can be done in a variety of ways, face to face, email or by phone.

Course Outline:

  • Increase knowledge and appreciation of cultural, social and ethnic diversity of Pacific people and ways to encourage and support smokers to stop.
  • Increase knowledge and confidence in using the ABC (Ask, Brief advice, Cessation support) approach to encourage and support stop smoking attempts.
  • Learn how to determine a smokers possible nicotine dependence, determine best treatment method using Nicotine Replacement therapy (NRT), and advise how to access treatment.
  • Assess knowledge and confidence about tobacco and supporting people who want to stop smoking.
  • Registration to be a Quit Card provider.

 

What happens after I complete the course:

You will receive a Certificate of Completion and can become a registered Quit Card provider with the Quit Group.

 

How much does the course cost?

This course is free.This course is fully funded by the Ministry of Health.

Where are the courses held?

We work in collaboration with you and your group to set dates that best suit your needs, and provide advice and guidelines for potential venues. We have set dates for training throughout the year at the Heart Foundation offices in Auckland (see our dates below).

We are a national service and can provide training in your location, whether you are in Canterbury, Wellington, Waikato, Auckland or other.

Courses can also be tailored and conducted for groups of 4-24 participants, at a time and location to suit your organisation.

Follow-up dates (Day Two)

Follow-up can be done at your work site or other venue, either individually or in your group. All Follow-up dates, times and venues are organised with yourself or your group following the Theory course.

 

What do I need to bring?

All you need to bring is a pen, some paper, a keen desire to learn and willingness to participate in learning activities, discussions and group work. All course materials will be provided.
