Who is this award for?

All early learning services across Aotearoa. If you have a current license with the Ministry of Education and are ready to make a positive difference in your community, you can sign up.

How does it work?

Your early learning service will get access to the Tohu Manawa Ora | Healthy Heart Award portal. The portal will signpost and guide you through your journey. While participating in the Tohu Manawa Ora | Healthy Heart Award, you'll be assigned a Nutrition Advisor who will help you along the way.

We recommend all services start at Rito, the founding level. Once you have achieved the Rito award, you can choose between two other stages, Whānau or Pā-harakeke. Each award has different themed strands for you to complete.

How long does it take to complete the award?

It depends on your situation. A year is a good timeframe to give yourself. Your Heart Foundation Nutrition Advisor will check in throughout your journey to see how you're doing.

Award levels

The award names represent the harakeke metaphor. They reflect a continuous, sustainable, empowering journey of growth and development from a firm foundation. There are three award stages. We recommend starting with Rito and building and strengthening your practices up to Pā-Harakeke.

Rito

Rito, is the heart of the plant, where new beginnings start. It recognises commitment in founding a healthy eating and physical activity environment.

More about Rito

Whānau

Whānau builds on the foundations set at Rito. It helps you build and strengthen existing healthy eating and physical activity foundations at your service.

Pā-Harakeke

With Pā-Harakeke your early learning service will weave healthy eating and physical activity practices sustainably into all aspects of your service environment.
