Warmer weather brings with it the chance to reconnect with the outdoors – whether that means getting out and about with friends and family, taking the time to tidy up the garden, or preparing your vegetable patch, now is the time to start growing.

It’s getting warmer and lighter in the evenings, and this brings with it the opportunity to get some vitamin D back into your life.  Find out how to enjoy this new season with our 5 ways to make the most of spring.

Enjoy the outdoors

Spring provides the ideal opportunity to spend more time outside. Being outdoors has many benefits – it’s good for your mind, it helps you stay active, and it improves your sleep.  Now that there are less rainy days and more sunlight, it’s easier to get physically active. For physical activity ideas, check out our website.

You can also take advantage of your local park by visiting with the kids or take in some beautiful scenery by going for a walk. Find a walk in your area.

Give the garden an overhaul

The warmer weather brings a welcome opportunity to spend more time out of the house and in the garden. If you’ve got a garden, giving it a tidy up can enhance the overall look and feel of your property.

Getting in the garden is a great way to be active, it can also help give you a feeling of accomplishment.  There are plenty of opportunities for making a start , from mowing the lawn, to cutting hedges and getting rid of weeds. You’ll love how fabulous your garden looks when summer arrives.

Grow some plants

Fruit, vegetables and plants all need time to grow. If you want to grow your own food, prepare a vegetable patch in your garden ready for new seeds , seedlings and small plants.  If you’re short on space, herbs , chillies and tomatoes can be grown in pots.

When it comes to herbs, rosemary and thyme are easy to grow in the garden and can be great for seasoning. Other herbs like mint and parsley are ideal for salads, condiments, or dressings.

Planting new flora can not only look good but may provide you with lots of fresh veges and herbs to turn into salads. Check out some of our healthy recipes here.

Lettuce, silverbeet, parsley, taro leaves, broccoli, tomatoes and peas are other delicious options to grow. Check out the Go Gardening website for some great tips on what vegetables to plant in spring.

Change the menu

A new season means it’s time to mix up the menu. Vegetables that were in season in winter can start to become more expensive, while spring vegetables become cheaper and plentiful.

We love the Vegetables.co.nz website because you can search for what fruit and veges are in season during different months throughout the year.

In winter, we tend to crave warm, comforting food. Use spring as an opportunity to lighten up your dishes with plenty of fresh vegetables. This Lentil Tabbouleh salad recipe is a great way to get started.

Spring clean the house

So, you’ve taken care of outdoors, but what about indoors? Spring will bring with it some rainy days too – use this time to spring clean your home and get rid of winter cobwebs.

Making small steps to clean the house can have big results – every little bit counts! From the oven to the fridge, bedrooms and bathrooms – there will always be dust to get rid of or clutter to clean. Put in the effort to create space and brighten up your home and it could end up looking like new.

Not only will a clean clutter-free home be good for your mind, but the act of cleaning it will make you active.

Putting your wellbeing first this spring can seem like a challenge, but it can be very rewarding if you maintain these healthy habits all year round. From being more active, to spending time outside and eating healthy foods. Are you ready to put a spring in your step?
